The Pinnaroo line branches from the Yelta line at Ouyen. It opened to Murrayville in 1912, and extended over the SA border to Pinnaroo in 1915. It was a fascinating line as far as stations where concerned, no two were the same, and even though some standardized buildings were provided for the time, they all had their own localised differences. In 1986 the vast majority still stood, by 1988 nearly all had been demolished and removed, only the tin halts of Galah and Linga, and Murrayville itself, remained. This line also offered an alternative route between Melbourne and Adelaide, and for a short time in 1995, was the main route between the two cities while the main Western Line was being standardised. In 1998, the line from Tailem Bend to Pinnaroo was standardised also, creating a break of gauge station.
A passenger service, provided by Diesel Railcar was provided to Pinnaroo until 1968.
This line history well covered at Andrew Waugh’s VR History site. There are yard diagrams and station history for many of the locations on the line at this page (Opens a .PDF file).
