Carpolac Line

The Carpolac line was a line serving grain silos in Victoria’s Wimmera district. It branched off the Serviceton line at Horsham, although it could be argued that this line really branched at East Natimuk (being the Balmoral line across to Horsham). I’ll stand to be corrected, and leave comments open on this page for that purpose.

And for the purpose of this section, we will deal with four stations that were captured to the west of East Natimuk. The line from Horsham to East Natimuk and then south to Noradjuha opened in August 1887. The line from East Natimuk to Goroke opened in July 1894 and then to Carpolac in May 1927. The line from East Natimuk to Carpolac closed on 8 December 1986, although the last train on the branch ran in February of that year. Thus when photographed by Davo in ’86 the line was still open, but had seen it’s last train.

There is an interesting story in the Wimmera Mail – Times about the record tonnages of grain that was moved along this and other small grain branches in times past. There is also a photo of the last train on the branch in the article.
