Wilmington Line

The Wilmington line was a narrow gauge South Australian branch that departed the Main Port Pirie to Broken Hill line at Gladstone. The line ran north from Gladstone to its terminus in the southern Flinders Ranges. The line appears to have opened during 1910 ( a more specific date would be good here – there is not much around) and closed during the 1980s.

The Junction station of Gladstone had an interesting history, with the mainline originally laid as a narrow gauge line. In 1927, a southern branchline towards Brinkworth was converted to Broad Gauge, creating a break of gauge station. In 1970, the mainline to Broken Hill was converted to Standard gauge, forming a triple break of gauge station. Eventually both the Narrow Gauge Wilmington line closed, soon followed by the southern broad gauge branch, leaving Gladstone a much reduced standard gauge siding.

Boy, amazing how when one keeps digging as to what one finds!
Searched dozens of pages of SAR, found Railpage etc etc.
Am including Gladstone to Wilmington (reduced size) in my/cousin layout in Melb. Shifted here 20 odd years ago from SA. currently combining our layouts in a 10m x 6m shed (lined). Finally found station references beyond my basic info!
    Thanks

I grew up in Wilmington and have good memories of the different types of trains that used to arrive at the Wilmington Railway Station. Also remember most of the Station Masters. The Gang that used to look after the line etc. Was a sad day when the station building was shifted. Also closure of the line
