Moockra

And Hammond.

Hammond is a location between Bruce and Moockra. Today very little remains at Hammond, and the classic SAR wooden station was long gone. This building was one of many that were located in a same, or similar style all over South Australia. And of course being of wood, were the first to go under the great demolitions of the late seventies and early eighties. Only one, or maybe two, examples still stand. The photo was taken in the early part of last century, and I cannot remember now where I found it!

Hammond once boasted a population of 600 and had three churches, a butter factory and a farm implement factory. The great drought of the 1880s saw the town’s population reduce dramatically, and today it is a virtual ghost town. Most buildings are private holiday homes such as the hotel, post office, school and station cottages.

As for Moockra, this small siding did not have long to go before its lovely building was removed. No buildings of this design remain today.
