The original alignment of the Southern Line was a more indirect route from Toowoomba. Trains working towards Wallangarra would depart Toowoomba via the Western Main line and branch at Gowrie Junction. In 1915, a more direct deviation through Drayton was opened, shortening the route by 9 miles.
The original Drayton station building has long been removed from the site. It still exists in Toowoomba, but is so altered it is unrecognisable. The site is now occupied by the Downs Steam Railway group, who have relocated a station building (from Yuleba) and a cream shed (from Gayndah), together with other buildings and rolling stock, to their site.
