Yass Junction

This important and still functioning station is located around four kilometers away from Yass itself. The station opened on 3 July 1876 as Yass but changed to its present name in1892. This was because a “tramway” was built from Yass Junction to the Yass “Town” station, to take passengers to the centre of Yass. The “trams” departed from a small platform located at the northern side of the main building on the down platform. The line opened in 1892 and passenger services finished in 1957. The line lingered on for goods purposes until 1988. Today a short stump only survives of this track. Like everywhere the yard has been rationalized, and many tracks removed. Thankfully, the signalbox survives in a good state of repair due to the ARHS Canberra, and the station itself is still attended for around 6 hours a day.
