Just wondering if you had any material on the Carpolac line, particuarly the Goroke area, I’m interested in the history of the line but haven’t been able to dig up any photos of it while it was in operation apart from a small photo of a T class hauling a grain train…
I’ll put the question to the man with the photos and let you know Simon. I’ll probably drop an email back at you once I get the answer.
Some of the comments on this page have been moved to the page that is relevant to the content or query.
Do you have photos of the RMSP’s on the Ballarat line ? As I wondering if there are any pictures of the ones that were between Deer Park and Rockbank & Rockbank to Melton ?
Thanks
Matt
Hi Matt,
Will put out a call and find out, but this one might be doubtful. One thing you could do is to post a request in the Railpage thread, seeing if : a) anyone has any, and b) they are willing to contribute them to the site. We would find them a good home here.
Hi,
Linville Station on the Brisbane Valley Line is about to celebrate it’s Centenary. Now on the Brisbane Valley Railtrail. I have some recent Photos, also some very old photos. I may also have a Photo of the Moore Station {the whole Station } I think the Moore Station Closed in 1969. The Theebine – Kingaroy line did go all the way to Nanango, I think the Nanango Station closed in the early 1960’s. I may be able to wangle a Photo for that also!
Kind Regards
Kate
Hi Kate,
Thanks for the info and would be great if you could wrangle those photos. Yes, the line once went to Nanango, and it was even approved for it to be connected to the Brisbane Valley Branch, but of course it never happened. I have an ambition to ride the BVRT some day soon, just need to find the time to do it!
If you want to get photos to us, you can email them via the link on this page, or upload them to the contribute page. Cheers!
Mike
Just having a foam through those magnificent Brisbane Valley editions of Grahams – wow! Just one point of finer detail though – I understood that the former station of Fairneyview (between Vernol & Clarendon) was its proper name, not “Fair View” as suggeste don two of the captions. Happy to stand corrected, but I do believe it was “Fairneyview”. The BV line had some classic QLD names! Otaba for goodness sakes…Cooragook, Vernol, Nukku – classic!! 🙂
Cheers,
H.
…..and that may be Vernor, not Vernol – will have to consult my bible of bollocks to clarify! 😛
Thanks H! Will look into this and correct accordingly.
Okay, the overriding authority on all things accurate (Wikipedia) has nominated that Fairney View (two words) is the correct location identity. Have corrected the captions.
Yes, that would be correct! Good deal I suggested that Id be happy to “Stand corrected” 😉
Regarding 5/11 of Eidsvold – Davo and I both have almost the same photo. What a classic broad scene as taken from the front of a real live 1720 class (not yet cut down, and in the traditional QR blue) – love the section car, camp wagon and station all in one – something that will never be repeated outside of a “set up” by a heritage railway. How cool!
I have some photos of Trains on the Kingaroy and Monto branch from the early naughties ? Would it be worth my while to submit them ?
Hi hugs! Sure would, especially if they are in yards or passing significant infrastructure.
Can I purchase copies of the Pialba Brach pictures please?
@Cliff – Reply sent to your email address.
The GY wagons on the Balmoral line were required until the line was finally decommisioned.
The contract for the super phosphate required that they be delivered by rail.
The GY’s wer left so that super could be loaded into them then delivered from them.
if memory serves me there were two Gy’s at each siding.
Thanks Fred,
I’ll copy your comment over to the relevant page.
Excellent stuff guys, keep it coming, got anything on South Gippy Railway, especially Leongatha.
Hi Ian,
Yes, I’d like to get that line done. I’ll ask the chap with the photos and find out what he has in the way of stuff from that region.
Hi guys,
I just discovered your site and think it is truly brilliant! I especially like the strong focus towards infrastructure including signals and signal boxes which is an area which has been largely ignored by most rail fans. Keep up the excellent work!
Well done with your site – an important record of SEQ rail history. I’m interested in photos of Lowood and Fernvale for a local history collection. Are file copies available for community use? (ref: Lowood District Community Website – http://www.lowood.qld.au) ‘Unknown’ station between Fernvale & Lowood was Vernor – although it’s now gone that area still retains the name.
Thanks
Jeff
Hi Guys,
I love the old station fodos. Thank god somebody took the time to take these classic shots and to now publish them.
I’m chaseing station and infrastructure photos of St. Lawrence, a station between Rockhampton and Mackay on Queensland’s central coast. Can you help?
Great stuff. Now what about some Leongatha Line?

Came across this site through my google feed for Wallangarra. Great photos!
I notice that you don’t put acknowledgement to photo ownership in the file name, in fact you don’t put any useful information in the file name. I know that it takes time but it keeps the provenance of the photo intact.
Hi David. Acknowledgements are in the captions, and the captions stay intact with the photo metadata. On this site, all photos that are not credited belong to either Dave Philllips or myself, and is sort of explained in the site intro and on the acknowlegement page. Personally, I abhor large filenames, and keep them to within 10 characters if possible. The filename was never designed to be an all round font of information . For indexing, searching and even owners info, I use ‘Tags’ (sometimes called labels) which is pretty much what they were designed for. Of course, I acknowledge that where this falls down is when you mouse over the thumbnails here… the ‘help’ text is the file name. Thus you need to click the thumbnail and let the image open to get info that is in the caption. Cheers…
Just looked at the Ingliston page and I think you should fix up the suggestion that a station existed at the site of Bank Box Loop. Ingliston station was situated at the top of the Ingliston Bank, some considerable distance from Bank Box Loop. Mind you there was a block post at Bank Post before the loop was opened. The small hut of the block post was at 40 1/2 miles which was just on the upside of the original up end points and I can remember seeing it as a kid.
Thanks David, I’ll check that out and correct as necessary
Carpolac. There never was a passenger station or platform at Carpolac. It was never opened for passengers. For most of its life, Goroke was the end of the passenger service although for a few months, a two days per week passenger service went to Mortat – where there was a passenger platform and there may still be a concrete block DR in existence. I have pictures somewhere.
I don’t see any reference to passenger stations or platforms at Carpolac.
Quite true but I quote “All that remained was the freight shed. Now there is even less than that, as seen at Vicrail stations.” with the inference there (in my mind at least) that there was more there at some stage. Now that surely would imply that passenger facilities existed. My suggestion is therefore to alter the caption to reflect that there never were any passenger facilities and that what you depict there is in fact what was there all along rather than “all that remains”. Just my thoughts for accuracy.
As you say David, the inference is in your mind. Note that the post leads with ‘This grain line….’ giving no indication of reference to passenger stations etc. And also note that the images display a complete lack of tracks, sidings, signal masts or any other railway infrastructure, so what part of “all that remained was a freight shed” is inaccurate? It does not surely imply that passenger facilities existed, but it does indicate you are reading stuff that is not there. Of course the Vicrailstations page displays even less: the goods shed has gone by the time Ross photographed the site. But thanks for your observations, they certainly keep us honest, and if there are genuine errors, we will correct them, as we have done at Ingliston.
Awesome job with this site. My Grandfather (Jack Cody) worked in Ballarat B and C boxes, so to see the internal photos of these signal boxes was very emotional. You have a photo of what you called the coal siding (now a car park) between B and C boxes which is on Doveton St. I remember him with his wooden trolley with steel wheels going down the hill to get a bag of briquettes. He lived at 423 Doveton St.
Do you have any more photos of the buildings beside B box which were used by the Signal maintainers or the Ways and Works siding and buildings beside C box. I have seen a photo taken from C box into the W&W siding but I have lost it.
Cheers….. Wayne
Hi Wayne,
Thanks for the comments. Davo thinks what’s on the site is all we have, but he said he’ll have another check anyway. The buildings you mentioned are referred to, and their disappearance (along with the hedge and fence) is certainly noticed and commented on in the captions.
This looks like a good website – I hope to see additions re SA – especailly the Metro Area
Hi Tom,
Thanks for you comment. I believe there are some more South Australian images being prepared, although they might be a little outside of the metro area. Angaston I believe was mention. This won’t appear until early next week due to work commitments however. But there is plenty more Adelaide Metro to come.
At North Geelong – C Box is still alive and well and not closed. Only A and B boxes have closed since the re-signalling a few years ago. Also the lop bracket post at the down end of North Geelong signalled all trains from Ballarat towards Geelong as they couldn’t get into the down platform so used the up platform instead and then crossed over to the down line on departure.
Nice set of prints of Traralgon. Could I suggest a few changes – in the captions of the signal box I would say it was moved not demolished. The park is the home of the Traralgon & District Model Engineers who have a large miniature railway layout and it runs regularly. The codes are not morse but are Station Service (SS) telephone codes. Stations were contacted by the ringing on the party line of the code for the location you wanted. In the photo taken from the car sidings, the arm on the post at the right took railmotors (mostly) from the dead end siding to the main platform after they had backed out of the Maffra dock, the disc was for moves to the dock. The Maffra motor waited in the dock for the down pass to arrive and then after van goods were transferred, it backed out and ran into the platform to pick up passengers.although most passengers joined the motor in the dock hance the sidings were fitted with point locks and signalled for passenger moves.
Hi David – yes, I realised that box was moved after I saw an image on vicsig. I then remembered I had taken one of the box myself in 2009, and was included in the gallery a bit later after publishing. I’ll make those corrections shortly. With regards to the SS codes, were they just standard morse codes by another name?
No they were actually long and short rings rather than dots and dashes. In my part of the world Avenel station (where I live) was four short rings. On the little cards that was shown as four short dashes not dots.
Just looked at Morwell – it wasn’t really the interface to the SEC railway, the two railways were quite independant of each other and even at the Morwell Briquette siding the Interconnecting Railway was not part of the yard. Oh and Thorpdale has no “e”.
Further comment on Moe/Morwell. The shot of the Y class is out along the Maryvale line so is strictly not Morwell.
Also the pictures of “Moe signal box” are in fact pictures of Moe auxiliary Frame, the signal box was actually a signal bay located in the station building. Andrew’s notes will show that quite clearly. The auxiliary frame building came from Williamstown Racecourse and at Moe was provided to work the connections between the main line and the yard. The main signal box could signal trains from the yard to Yallourn and from the platform to the main line but did not work any points down that end.
Re: Y class: Close enough to Morwell for the purposes of this site. It is after all a photo site, and Davo desired that the paper train image be displayed. It would otherwise be an orphan. I might need to put a disclaimer on here somewhere, noting that although we might introduce each page with a brief history (if available), it is only generic in nature, and hopefully not history changingly inaccurate. There are other sites on the net dedicated to providing precise accurate history, (which I’ll link to) so we we’ll try not to re-invent the wheel, and keep focused on getting the images published.
“There were two signal boxes at one stage, with A Box at the up end of the yard being out of use by 1998, and B box on the down end of the platform closed in 2006”
B Box was closed long before 2006; and hasn’t existed on the platform since at least 1998 (not sure of exact removal date)
Until the RFR works, there was a signalling panel inside Warragul station’s office.
Thanks Matt. I will look into this, and correct it once I have some more tangible facts at my disposal.

There were 14 double wire frames in Victoria – I can think of 7 on the Gippsland line – Berwick, Officer, Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon, Tynong, Bunyip and Longwarry, also at Mount Waverley, Glen Iris, Lethbridge, Meredith, Elaine, Lal Lal and Eaglehawk. I’ll let you decide whether that makes them quite unusual or not. There were also a number of places where there were a number of double wire levers amongst the regular levers – Redcliffs, Wodonga Coal Sidings and Moe to name but three.
Now that takes me back…Harristown was a top train spot in the early nineties, watching the shunt loco trying to get five or six fuel tankers into the Caltex siding on frosty rails (rolled in the 1870s) and listening to morning grain trains working flatout into the station from both directions…in those pre-coal days it was the best place to visit
The three pictures shown for Meeniyan are all on a wooden bridge not passing through the yard area.
Good to see your eyes are working. I’ve put the wrong intro onto this page. Grrrr
Original text was supposed to be for Buffalo. Both pages fixed now.
Brad’s shot is Menangle Park not Junction.
Last two Frankston shots, change Stony Creek to Stony Point — typo obviously.
Yes typo. Due to working through a station up here called Stoney Creek, so it comes off the keyboard in auto when typing similar sounding and regularly used locations.
Baxter caption ……cross of the Stony Creek Motor …………..
Stony Point
I can give you some more info. I was in the Tyabb Fire Brigade.
Back in the 1970’s (I think it was ’75) the station in this picture burned down. The Fire Brigade, which is still located just out of shot to the right of this pic got its electricity from a cable linked to the station – and when the power failed, they had to ring all the firefighters to turn them out!
Thanks for the comment Brad, I’ll do a quick edit on the page and refer readers down to your comment.
Train Order signal not Train Control
The shack in the background of the station sign pic seems to match up with this one in google streetview (http://maps.google.com.au/maps?q=booleroo+centre&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Booleroo+Centre+South+Australia&gl=au&ll=-32.704364,138.143442&spn=0.011159,0.022724&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=-32.704057,138.143236&panoid=F4xOIiwLvhMDR9GBScjM9g&cbp=12,213.93,,0,13.66) Even the gum tree matches 🙂 I’d say that Terka would be directly behind you, if you were looking at the shack
I think you’re onto something there John! Nice detective work.
G Day you,ve got a very fasinating site here. Very well done laid out etc. But what i would like (or hope to) Is i,ve only just recently purchased a property in Quorn S,A. (first st) And i am trying hopeing to track down early day photo,s. Earlyer the better of course. But i,ll be happy with anything realy. Prefferably with an early pic of the house i,ve just bought. Where would i be able to track down such a request would you reckon?? Im hopeing you could possibly help me. Or point me in the right direction. Thankyou for your time, And look forward to your reply..
Hi Adam,
You might need to find out if Quorn has it’s own historical society – they often hold great collections of photos. Failing that give the Flinders Ranges Council a try, or even a local library – many local historical papers are often stored in these places. Best of luck with your research.
Turns out that Tynong station survives – it was relocated to a religious holiday camp in Tynong North and restored externally; http://mvr.org.au/old_site/about/accommodation.html (scroll down to the bottom).
Greatly appreciate all the time devoted to this blog and the excellent photographs. If only I could return and spend more time investigating this fascinating area. I hope that the photographer was safely carrying all the water ! The bike rider seems to have been travelling “light”. Was explaining to my grand-kids recently how one used to see cars in the outback carrying canvas water bags on the front bumper for “cool” water. It’s such a long time since I was driving in the bush that I wonder if this is still the practice now that we have styrofoam coolers?
Hi Colin – the bike rider was photographed from the adequately provisioned ‘support vehicle’ . These days, the water the air conditioned comfort of most vehicles keeps the water plenty cool. Some are even equipped with fridges etc. So the old canvas water bag is pretty redundant these days, but they are not entirely extinct either.
Nice work – thanks for the update and the link.
i was just wondering if you have any photos of bowden signal box and the gates it would be nice to see them as i lived a cross the road. thanks
Well done David. Are you a member of Signalling Australia Group? They would love to see your site.
Regards
Barry
Hi Ivan,
Sadly by the time I photographed Bowden the box had long gone, so I don’t have any personally. Hopefully soon will do the Port line, and maybe I can chase up some pictures. The idea is to have as much a complete coverage as possible of every station, and its environs.
Cheers,
David.
Hi Barry,
No I am not a member of Signalling Australia, I will have to chase it up when I have some time. Personally I’ve allways liked the old forms of safeworking, so have gone out of my way to photograph such things at every opportunity. Otherwise glad you are enjoying it all so far.
Cheers,
David.
Great site, I have just discovered. Very nice touch with the publishing of the tickets. I don’t think I have seen this before. Very interesting and well done. You can almost feel the journey on this suspended line between Queanbeyan-Cooma-Bombala. Thankyou for the photos and “tickets” !
Kindest Regards,
David Hunt
Signal box dates from 26-3-1913. Curious as to where the 1910 date came from?
Nice shots but Creswick is very much a north south alignment although the railway does approach from a westerly aspect on the down owing to the easier grades. The sharp curve at the down definitely brings the line onto a north south alignment.
Hi David,
Yes Mick has comfirmed its true. So I will go and change accordingly. If you have any photos we could use, and credit to you of any places along this line, it would be much appreciated.
Thanks for you interest,
Cheers.
Davo.
Actually from Railpage, a history appeared in a thread on Creswick. However since you have a precise date it is even better.
Do you know if Clunes had a large box like Creswick, as there was a massive interlocking hole under the platform some years ago, or was it just one of those things that was planned and never happened?
Clunes (and probably Talbot as well) were to be interlocked like Creswick but sense prevailed in head office or the money ran out, and they were not done although Clunes got the building but not the frame. The only frame at Clunes was the 10 lever machine in the dinky box at the Melbourne end of the station building. I have pics but they will need sorting out from the chaff in my collection.
Hi David,
Thanks very much for the information, just writing up Clunes now. I have seen pictures of the small shed you mentioned and remember the great hole under the platform where it stood for a much larger structure. The only thing I need to clarify did they actually build a large box there, as in the case of Maroona, which then sat unused, empty, and later demolished, or just prepare the platform, then put up the small shack with it’s 10 levers and that was the end of it. I thought I had pictures of Clunes before they shortened the platform right up, however sadly seems when I made it there with a camera the work was already done.
Thanks for any pictures you may find,
Cheers,
David.
That shot of the day train at Talbot is “The Sunraysia” not the “The Vinelander”. The Vinelander only ran at night. A bit of potted history here – the overnight train has run for many many years northbound in fact all its life, the southbound ran during the day for many years but became an overnight train during the 1930s. The overnight train was named The Vinelander 8/8/1972 and the train ceased to run 12/9/1993. Twice in recent times some of the mid week trips have been run during the daylight and the two periods were – The Sunlight 16/2/1957-27/4/1967 and then The Sunraysia 16/2/1987-30/5/1990. Do you know about the Mildura line CD. Bruce McLean produced a CD on the history of the Mildura line but only the mallee portion i.e. Woomelang to Yelta and branches. Well worth looking out for it and a steal at the price, if it was hard copy would be worth close to $100.
Oops should have called it The Mildura Sunlight.
Hi David,
Thanks for that again, Ive gone and updated and changed the relevant details on the photos just now. The passenger train information is very good to know, and I will work some of this in along the way, however some appears now in the Talbot history.
I will see if I can find a copy of this CD, especially as photos along the line Ouyen to Murrayville of the old stations seem to be hard to come by. Most vanished around 1987 to 1988.
Anyway thanks for the help again,
David.
In the intro – Tuaggra not that NSW spelling.
Boy, amazing how when one keeps digging as to what one finds!
Searched dozens of pages of SAR, found Railpage etc etc.
Am including Gladstone to Wilmington (reduced size) in my/cousin layout in Melb. Shifted here 20 odd years ago from SA. currently combining our layouts in a 10m x 6m shed (lined). Finally found station references beyond my basic info!
Thanks

was a driver back then good memories
Worked in Bowen as an engineman from 1982 till 1991. What a shame to see what it has become! Don’t miss the old pommie locos though.
Was a Lad Porter, Cleaner Firemen and Train Driver in Bowen and I have very good memories.
The old railway store can be seen via google map/satellite on the corner of Pantall and Don streets- it is now the Brolgas Rest Vet Clinic. During WW2 troops would detrain for meals here- a section of the western wall was propped up to serve the troops.
By 1991 it has started to be vandalised: we found that the station’s booking office had been broken into.
Of note, it was the northern terminus of a 280hp Walker railmotor service from IIRC Ballarat.
I was travelling north on the Queenslander in 1986 when aCyclone went across the coast.
The Train was Kept at Bowen for three Days and Two Nights..First Class Sleeper Passengers
stayed in their berth. The Economy Sitting Passenger spent a Night in The Trainmens Quarters..
All the Passengers were bused north to Townsville on Wednesday.
Charlton pics at last!! Been all over google and finally used “rail trips to kulwin” and railpg chucked up a nice video and reminiscences of when fan trips ran w/out the heavy hand of the nanny state.
Have left messages on various sites -but nevermind – these will do nicely -tho some mid 20th c would be lovely too,
All 4 a history museum – type project.
Who’s looking after this site now that john’s left our mortal coil?
These are just John’s photos, which he gave us permission to use. Site is still maintained by the original pair of dills that kicked it off.
I’m really enjoying seeing the North Queensland Stations. The last one Bowen as well. Was lucky enough to see a few of these stations as a kid and brings back memory’s.
Keep up the Great work.
I love the photos from Sainty. Spent many a times as a young boy travelling to St Lawrence on the train with dad who was a Guard at Mackay. Brings back many fond memories, great photos.
I have to say i’m really enjoying these North Queensland stations and loco pic. The West side of Camila Station and sadly the last Cain train ;-( Keep up the great work.
Laura station was demolished in c2010
Just found your site the other day.Great site.I’ve placed a link to it on my raillinks page. Please, when you get a chance, check out my railway website and consider placing a link on your site.

Hi Richard,
Be happy to link to the ‘Railway’ section of your page rather than have to navigate past your personal stuff. If you can set up your railway page as an index we’ll link it. In the meantime, anyone reading your comment can find your photos by clicking on your username.
Hats off to you for preserving images of our rail heritage!
In the Victorian section you use a lot of incorrect terminology when describing signals. Many photos of home signals are described as inner or outer starting signals. In Victoria a starting signal NEVER protected points, (if it protected points it was a home signal)
When we did have starting signals they were called either “starting signals” or “advanced starting signals” (there were only a handful of advanced starting signals in the whole state) We NEVER called them inner or outer starting signals.
Victoria never had shunt signals, they are called disc signals.
Hope this helps
best regards
Mark Bau
Hi Mark,
Thanks for the corrections and I will admit to being advised about this some time ago. For the sake of accuracy I will search out the errors and correct them, once I find a bit of time. Must also admonish the git with the NSW safeworking background who put up the original captions 🙂 .
Oh, and thanks for the acknowledgement of the site. I am happy to admit that the work that you have done over on victorianrailways.net was one of the inspirations, or perhaps motivations, for getting this site off the ground. So well done back!
Cheers,
Mike
The marker on the map is in the wrong postion. The marker needs to be moved 35mm to the left. The station was West of Rossiter Rd not East. The narrow line running East just below the railway line is where the station used to be. When you sttod on the platform you looked North straight up Moody St.
Thanks Jason. Fixed hopefully.
I grew up in Wilmington and have good memories of the different types of trains that used to arrive at the Wilmington Railway Station. Also remember most of the Station Masters. The Gang that used to look after the line etc. Was a sad day when the station building was shifted. Also closure of the line
The name of Moradoo, meaning resting place was given to the station as it adjacent to the Crib Point cemetery.
The place where I was born & grew up, fond memories of train travel to & from Melbourne. Loved the old rail motors the best.
There’s one siding missing on the SA Wilmington Line list.
Perroomba was half-way between Booleroo Centre and Melrose.
Can’t provide a picture I’m afraid – came to your site hoping to find one!
(The Perroomba you will find on Google is a nearby farmhouse. The siding was located about a kilometre eastish of here.)
Cheers, Felicity
dear sir /madam ,
what an idiotic business pulling down the overhead wires. You would think this would have been the handiwork of a liberal govt. but no, an ALP government . The stupidity of those in power is infinite . regards michael taylor
ps compared to nsw with electrics to newcastle , kiama, katoomba victoris is in the middle ages
Great stuff Mike, congratulations to you both!
Don’t know how many times I’ve said this?.But this is one of the most enjoyable sites i have ever subscribed to.
Love the North Queensland posts all of them. Wish i was home there again.
Great Work
Bell line was used for making a moviecalled Chase through night.
Rm 55 was used.
Filming. Was at kaimkillenbum.
It was renamed Carrabum.
I have that sign.
Medway Jct is out of sequence in the NSW south list. Should be between Wingello and Marulan.
I was employed at Underbool in the mid 1960’s for a number of years. The station was unique in that in earlier days it had served refreshments and still had the cellar under the station office.
Pics 4 and 5 are taken at Carlsruhe. 4 is looking at the station in the down direction and 5 is looking in the up direction, both from the down line.
Does anyone have any info history or pics of the closed Cecil Plains line that ran from Oakey Qld some sections of track are still there along the route and the station has been renovated and turned into a museum next to the grain silos at the station.
There was a line that ran from Toowoomba to Crows nest Qld pulled up in 1964 mainly used for hauling timber the old Kleinton station is now a private residence and evidence of the bridges and cuttings along the route still exist.
I have submitted many pictures of southern NSW stations & branches on a photographic tour in 1980 to another site but would you like some?
Where’s Armstrong in your list? It was a station between Stawell and Great Western. My late father, William Humay, Retired RSM was a VR employee at Armstrong.
Hi Joanne. We haven’t progressed beyond Ararat as yet so Armstrong does not get mention just yet.
