Once the extremely busy main western line, this line was ‘services suspended’ (closed) from 1995, when line to Adelaide was converted to Standard Gauge via Gheringhap and Maroona. In July 2004, the section was re-opened to passenger services to Ararat, utilising the Velocity Railcars.
The line from Melbourne originally reached Ballarat (Via Geelong) in 1862. The line eventually extended west to Beaufort in 1874, reaching Ararat in 1875. Images of the locations on this line date back to 1986. Ballarat and District has its own line section due to weight of photos and sub-locations, and can be found at this link. This section will start with Windermere.
