St Arnaud railway station was builtĀ in 1879, when the Ballarat to St Arnaud line finally arrived in the town. At this time gold was the main driver of the economy, so the building was reflecting a regional town of importance. Made of brick with cast iron verandah supports, the station master’s residence was incorporated into the design. Today this well built structure still stands, and even though no passenger trains have called here since 1993 on a regular basis, the yard still sees use for freight. It has been added to the register of heritage buildings of state importance, as well as the unusualĀ hemispherical water tower, the last remaining type of this design. More historical information can be found here at the Victorian Heritage Register website.
