Culcairn is one of five surviving stations between Junee and Albury, and one of four still in use, from over fifteen various loops and sidings. A few crossing loops have also lasted, however all traces of signal boxes and stations have long since been removed. Culcairn, opened in 1880 and still maintaining its original station building, was once a three way junction, with the Holbrook line to the east, closed in 1975, and Corowa, on the NSW/Victorian border to the west, closed in the early 90’s. A large ground level interlocking frame was to the south of the station, some nice semaphore signals of varying designs, and naturally a large and beautiful garden. An island platform and an additional shelter stood opposite the main building, again long demolished, however showed the passenger traffic once on offer. These days the main building still stands and is well maintained and in use as a craft shop, selling jams and other touristy type impedimenta. The classic toilet block to the south of the station was in fact located from Gerogery in 1990. Listed onto the NSW Heritage branch, hopefully this will ensure Culcairn’s upkeep and preservation for many years to come.
