Uranquinty

Uranquinty was one of the few stations to last some years when centralized traffic control was put through from Junee to Albury in the early 1980s. Opened in 1880 as Sandy Creek, the station gained the name Uranquinty in 1891. A long and winding, and not very profitable branch to Kywong wandered off to the west, which closed in 1988, however all the stations themselves were closed in the mid 1970s along this line. However Uranquinty’s importance was a busy crossing loop, and with the electric staff system in operation, it was attended continually. Once this safworking method was superseded, the empty building lingered until 1988, when all trace was removed, joining many other small, but previously vital locations, down the main south.
