The main south line is the trunk railway that runs from metropolitan Sydney and extends through to the Victorian border at Albury. It passes through the important regional centres of Moss Vale, Goulburn, Cootamundra, Junee, Wagga Wagga and Albury. A number of important branch lines are also connected to the Main South.
The line opened as a branch from the main Suburban line at what was to become known as Granville to Liverpool in 1856. The line was extended (and diverted) in stages over the following years, reaching Albury in 1881. In 1883, the Victorian Railways extended the North East line from Wodonga to Albury, causing the creation of a break of gauge station.
