An inland loop line between Maryborough and Gladstone was formed when lines from Maryborough to Gayndah, and Gladstone to Many Peaks were expanded and eventually connected at the small settlement of Monto. In fact, Monto was approached from three directions with another line being approved and commenced through the Callide Valley from Rannes. Construction of the latter line was never completed.
Construction from Gayndah towards Monto was approved in 1910, with the first sod being turned in 1911. By 1922 the other two lines were also under construction towards Monto. The divided effort ensured that progress was slow. The line from Maryborough finally reached Monto in 1928. The line from Gladstone to Monto was opened in 1931, forming the loop line.
At time of initial photo scanning, there were a couple of gaps in the stations captured along the line, including complete locations such as Gayndah, or low photo numbers for major locations . Hopefully, some useful images will come to light and be included here in the future. The first section covered will be the Southern leg from Monto to Mungar, although seeing as I have a photo of it, Mungungo (to the North of Monto) will be incuded for now.
